March 275 News & Rumors

Prince Aylin’s forces have begun to reach the fighting in Goldenfield, supporting the Nightriver forces there to make quick work of reclaiming the territory from Clan Stonetooth. While the situation is still very fresh, with Aylin’s forces still arriving, spirits are high now that a concentrated effort has begun in the area. The warmer weather always means more action, and it seems like Nightriver and Aylin’s Reach are more than prepared for the fights ahead. The only concern now is the increasing worry that too much damage has been done to Goldenfield to be able to recover quickly enough to provide supplies for the continued warfare this year.

The arrest of Duke Joakim Ventrini has lit the flame of the City-State of Newhope’s rumor mill in the weeks following the Political Dinner. With charges of embezzlement, entrapment, conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, and treason all held against him and no statements made yet by the Council, people wonder if they’ll be made to wait for the trial to get answers. Worse even–wondering if the Duke will survive Newhope detainment the way the last arrested Council member couldn’t. After the coordinated raid on Ventrini’s estate and the continued seizure of all his holdings, its clear that this was no simple arrest. Until Newhope releases an official statement, speculation about the Duke’s crimes is likely to continue to grow to epic proportions.

Not only are Duke Ventrini’s crimes at the top of the mind for many, but the method of his arrest as well. Specifically, an arrest order supported by Prince Aylin and signed by every Council member except the Grand Duke Byron Richards. Questions have begun to rise surrounding this detail– could it be a show of power from the remaining Council members? Was Grand Duke Richards not supportive of the arrest? Once again, only an official Newhope statement can clear the air, but the City-State is mysteriously tight-lipped.

The northern section of the Great Wolf’s Hackles has unleashed, the melt causing a mudslide at the edge of Nightriver’s territory. Thankfully, no major settlements were harmed, but the arduous task of traveling around the fall out will most certainly impact a few Nightriver supply lines as the clan likely does not have the spare hands to begin cleaning up the disaster with all their resources tied up in the war—not to mention the rumors of a planned joint offensive to connect the frontlines of Stormjarl and the Yurnai bridge. Speculation has risen that, being a collection of mountains, perhaps the Great Wolf’s Hackles delivered an equal-measure disaster on the other side, where Clan Grimward will also have to contend with this disaster among their own war efforts.

January 275 – News & Rumors

Across Aylin’s Reach, rumors are buzzing about the Northern Syndar having returned after their seemingly short return home. Seeing them traveling further out from the busking city center than their previous visit, the people of Aylin’s Reach are eagerly waiting to see what’s next from the mysterious new friends the city-state seems to have made.

In the Pass— the thin area connecting Clan Nightriver to Grimward between the rocky mountains of the Great Wolf Hackles— Champion Holmar Bloodmoon has led a charge against Grimward forces in the area in an attempt to gain ground on this heavily-contested war front. The warpacks expected a hard fight against Grimward’s great army in the area, full of blood and singing steel, but instead were met with a skeleton crew of Grimward raiders. After the realization that Grimward successfully carried a ruse for months, Nightriver leadership has been moving warpacks to drive Clan Stonetooth out of Clan Goldenfield lands, and been in discussions to train up more… stealthy scouts in the coming months.

Clan Whiteoak’s shared border with former Clan Shattered Spear territory has remained heavily patrolled by Stonetooth forces. As Clan Whiteoak sees their first responsibility to see the Shield of Mardrun hold steady despite the war ravaging to their southwest, a supply sharing mission was embarked during a break in the cold temperatures. Despite this winter being the coldest the continent has seen in years, Stonetooth turned away the supplies, stating definitively that their outposts are taken care of. It’s unclear to Whiteoak leadership if the truth was shared, or if the lack of previous mordok activity over the year has contributed to their supposed successful outposts, but it is clear that whatever Stonetooth is doing— they’re confident in their ability to do it.

Pups in Pack Sjoulfur are being kept awake at night by a wandering spirit they’ve coined as “The Gouglar”. The cackling of these “spirits” can supposedly be heard all night while they terrorize households with small misfortunes. Lanterns emptied of oil, a blanket gone missing, a tangled ball of wool yarn— all are sure signs of The Gouglars presence.

Worry not, children of Sjoulfur. The presence of mischievous spirits in the winter will surely mean a great fishing harvest come springtime.

The waters around Clan Stormjarl are finally looking more like ground gained against Grimward this month. After months of Grimward domination in the area with very little outside help for the allied fleet, they were able to push back against the Grimward naval fleet enough to turn the area into a highly contested war-zone. The war of attrition here may be finally looking up for the Stormjarl coastline, and those trying to travel it.

October 274 – The Conquering: A Choice to be Made

Crimson Tides. Grimsendir’s Last Stand. The Fall of Clan Shattered Spear. The Rise of Pack Bloodmoon. A Mountain of Corpses. Into the Fire. The Battle of Hammerfall. Sharpening the Spear. The battles of the past shape the war to come, outcomes changed by those who earned a burning pyre and by those who lived to fight again and carry their memory.

The single blow of a hammer into the skull of Clanleader Branthur Nightriver ignited chaos and war on a scale paling the civil war of the prior decade. Blood, oaths, hardkept honor, and difficult hardship has found itself to frontlines and homes across clans and kingdoms, but The Conquering isn’t over and the scales have shown no winner, only those who have lost. A year prior to this October will mark the fall of Clan Shattered Spear, but the time for remembrance is fleeting as emerging news on the war spreads like wildfire.

As the war progresses, lack of reliable information has been found to be a challenge, as allies often struggle to efficiently communicate while scouts and spies slipping in and out of enemy territory on the widely different fronts has proven to be an immense difficulty. Martial units on the frontline send reports lacking information past what stands before them, and useful information not acted upon has quickly lost its value due to The Conquering’s ever-evolving state. However, in the face of this critical challenge, the wartables and command briefings of the various kingdoms and clans have worked hard to summarize and share the current situation of the conflict.

Clan Stormjarl slowly drowns against Clan Grimward, Newhope’s new offensive begins across the Yurnai, pillars of smoke billow in The Pass, and morale collapses in Hammerfall.

Clan Stormjarl:

For Clan Stormjarl, the war never truly ended in their hearts after they were on the brink of defeat before help came during the Civil War. Their endless efforts to strengthen their border against Grimward and to be ready for future conflicts has paid off, even after a sizable portion of their fleet was burned to ashes at the start of The Conquering. The underdog that has traded blow for blow, blood for blood, and been aided by cut off allies.

The words hang heavy as news travels that Clan Stormjarl has lost the northern third of its lands to Clan Grimward, while Grimward’s raider fleet partially intercepts the supplies and reinforcements from Newhope, Prince Aylin, Clan Nightriver, and other allies. Clan Stormjarl doesn’t falter or crack though, as their loss of territory is marked by organized retreats, new defensive lines, and the blood of Grimward warpacks. The actions of their people, leadership, and outside aid have changed what would have been a worse fate, and many were sure that Clan Stormjarl would have fallen by now if not for their extensive preparations and allied help. Their stalwart defense continues to be a greater challenge for Clan Grimward to overcome compared to the Civil War.

  • Stormjarl’s northern coastal watchtowers and outposts on the Scar denied Grimward’s attempt at a surprise sealanding invasion, allowing Stormjarl to reinforce weakened areas and stop their warpacks from becoming cut off or surrounded before safely retreating to fight again.
  • While Stormjarl’s northern hospital was forced to be abandoned as the frontline was pushed back, the healers and aids were kept safe and will be able to form a new hospital.
  • The dotted line of bolstered outposts on the Scar has proven to be more than just a thorn for Grimward. Despite several outposts being lost on the northern portion of the border, Stormjarl’s southern border portion remains protected by the remaining outposts. Grimward has continued to be forced to put notable effort into bringing down these outposts when attempting to gain ground.
  • Efforts on the sea have allowed periodic groups of ships full of supplies and soldiers to reach Clan Stormjarl safer. With these reinforcements helping guard on the eastern border, Clan Stormjarl was able to move additional warpacks to their bludgeoned northern front. While the risk of food and medicine shortages has been largely negated, Clan Stormjarl has begun to see the signs of upcoming equipment and material shortages.

Stormjarl continues to lose ground, but has slowed and bled Grimward’s advance. Their allies refuse to break their promise as aid continues to be sent across the coast to Clan Stormjarl and as they fight together despite the travel dangers at sea. Clan Stormjarl’s fate will be critically affected by the actions and outcome of Newhope on the Yurnai River.

The Yurnai River & Newhope:

The river has been watched over by both sides, remaining quiet for most of the war as the few small bridges were destroyed at The Conquering’s start. The quiet on the river was broken a year ago when a coalition army crossed via self-provided ferries while Grimward was focused in Clan Shattered Spear, rapidly invading and burning a portion of Clan Grimward’s southern countryside and smaller villages before retreating southward into Clan Stormjarl to avoid becoming overwhelmed by responding warpacks. Since this attack, the river has remained quietly watched over as neither side dares a follow up attack which risks an army being entrapped on the other side.

Despite fighting in Clan Shattered Spear, The Pass, and both on the coast and mainland of Clan Stormjarl, Newhope has found themselves criticized for their slow response earlier in the war and potentially lackluster actions taken to currently combat Clans Grimward and Stonetooth. Different stories stirred as rumors traveled of Newhope shaping their gladiators into units, using their arenas for unknown forms of training, and stockpiling resources, but the time of rumors has ended.

Newhope hopes its careful secrecy has paid off, as an army of veteran soldier units and new gladiator skirmisher units march west while their combat fleet and coastal ferry ships move to the mouth of the Yurnai river. The plan being to ferry units of soldiers across the river to hold ground after which the modified ferry ships are used as supports to rapidly build a bridge that can be used to advance further troops and supplies into Clan Grimward’s lands, striking the honor-lost clan directly and likely taking the pressure off of Clan Stormjarl in the long-term. Their plan was in the works for a long time, but some actions of those around the great city of Newhope have caused alterations to the final phase as they march.

  • With a series of watchtowers being recently completed on the river near Starkhaven, the future bridge’s location has been moved upriver to be overwatched and better protected by these towers.
  • While Grimward’s raider fleet was contested during their initial invasion into Clan Stormjarl lands, they have since had greater freedom to be problematic. Newhope’s fleet prepares to brace for a potentially strong seaborne counterattack at the mouth of the Yurnai likely the month after their river invasion begins.

As Newhope’s armies move into place for their invasion in October, the council welcomes any aid from allies who wish to join their direct invasion into Grimward. Whether by additional volunteers for the vanguard who will first cross and create a pocket of held territory without reinforcements until the bridge is finished, supplies and troops to continue the offensive once the bridge is built, or many other possible ways to help the operation. Either way, Newhope successfully completing this bridge on the Yurnai will critically affect the fate of Clan Stormjarl and will open up Clan Grimward to be directly attacked on a new warfront.

The Pass & Clan Nightriver:

The largest clan of Mardrun, Clan Nightriver, was the first to see blood when their people were killed by Grimward raiders after their clan leader was executed. Nightriver has fought seeking blood and revenge for their fallen people and leader, refusing to forgo their allies and those who rely on them. From the coasts of Clan Stormjarl, the valleys of Hammerfall, and the mountains of The Pass, their war paint has been seen across every frontline of the war due to their clan’s large population. Fielding and supplying such a large army has had difficulties in turn, but their reliable less-combative ally of Clan Goldenfield has always been reliable in supplying food during difficult times. Though as the war continues to shift and change, Clan Nightriver has found itself at risk of being stretched thin across the three main war fronts, which makes many speculate on Clan Grimward’s current situation as they are spread on two fronts. For Clan Nightriver, this risk has been partially negated thanks to the efforts of its allies and the decisions that put new leadership in place.

  • Packleader Sylvir Bloodmoon was appointed as the new Clanleader of Nightriver last year. Her leadership has been found to be a skilled balance in keeping the supplies and logistics of the clan running while also ensuring that the frontlines have what they need to continue their fight; though some say that her inexperience with non-ulven relations has slowed coordination between her and the council. With Chieftain Halfrid Bloodriver being named the new Warleader at the same time, some question if Nightriver has lost its aggression and initiative that Holmar inspirationally led the warpacks with, but others believe that these traits being foremost may have not have led to a quick victory in this war and would have harmed the clan in the long-run.
  • Originally a source of Grimward raids early in the war, Clan Nightriver’s new outpost firmly controls their smaller portion of The Pass that was hard fought and bled to gain ground on.
  • The hard and rapid work done to bring the ironsand mine into operation this summer has offset the nearing iron shortage in Nightriver, allowing them to continue creating and repairing equipment for their warpacks and stopping a wave of economic change in surrounding lands.

Warning horns have sounded from The Pass of the Great Wolf Hackles. Despite news from The Pass indicating a quiet past few months, scores of smoke pillars now billow from behind Grimward’s frontline defenses. likely sourced from far more campfires than the month prior With Newhope’s army in The Pass having already moved south in preparation for their invasion into Grimward, Clan Nightriver brings news to its allies of this potentially great army that stands at their doorstep as they move reserve warpacks and multiple half-strength warpacks to reinforce and brace their outpost for the coming attack. Clan Nightriver makes no call for outside aid at The Pass, as the news coming from Clan Goldenfield further north is more dire.

Hammerfall:

Hammerfall, named after the focused strikes of smithing hammers and the bloody blows of warhammers, has become a volatile and complex frontline of the war. The warpacks of Clans Ironmound, Stonetooth, and thralled Shattered Spear find themselves battling against the lines of Clans Nightriver, Goldenfield, unconquered Shattered Spear, and mixed allied forces. Thrown into the fray are stray packs of Salt Beasts, ever hunting for isolated and easy targets to grab in the night. Only guesses can carry about where these monsters are coming from, but rumors have passed that Clan Ironmound’s forces have seen combat with them too while Stonetooth manages to just avoid them somehow.

Despite this, the eastern forces have found themselves strained. While they have martially fought well and have forced hard engagements on their attackers, their morale reaches its breaking point. For many months, the units and warpacks of the frontline have found themselves forced to fight the thralled warpacks of their past ally Clan Shattered Spear, who throw themselves into battles recklessly to save their families back home from Stonetooth’s dishonorable tactics; while at night the shrieks of stalking Salt Beasts fill the air, dissuading sleep and fueling nightmares. Crushed spirits and peaking fears spread across the frontline that holds Hammerfall, making the main line of warpacks flee to escape the horrors of dishonorable tactics and flesh hungry monsters they bravely faced against for months. Reinforcements and the arrival of Warleader Halfrid Bloodriver reforms the warpacks and stops the retreat, but not before the held ground in Hammerfall is lost. A new line is drawn in the sand as Ironmound and Stonetooth advance into the gap, with Clan Goldenfield’s people and their important yearly harvest now in immense danger .

  • Thanks to the efforts of outside trainers and equipment providers, the free people of Clan Shattered Spear find themselves marching north with newly trained warpacks just in time as the frontline collapses. Clan Nightriver’s northern border remains better secured thanks to these arriving warpacks.
  • Reports tell of Salt Beasts being slain around Bladehome, allowing a portion of Nightriver’s lines in the area to need to retreat less far to escape their nightmares. Rumors tell that a warpack of Clan Ironmound was even involved, but these rumors are unclear on the level of cooperation made between the two opposing forces in this hunt.
  • The fortress towns of Bladehome and Shieldhaven remain obstacles to their enemy in Hammerfall, but have become cut off from their allies’ warpacks and support as the frontline shifts away from them. The two walled settlements stand amid dangerous conditions, but have forced Clan Ironmound to leave warpacks behind to encircle the Bladehome pocket and siege Shieldhaven directly.

While the frontline on Clan Nightriver’s northern border has stabilized and reformed, Clan Goldenfield struggles to reform and is on the backfoot against Clan Stonetooth’s exploitative tactics. Clan Goldenfield failing to receive immediate and notable defensive aid will see their critical winter food stocks stolen or burned. The loss of their territory and their famous harvest support could spell disaster to their allies that rely on these supplies, especially with winter looming closer every day.

A Future Undecided

The characters and organizations of Mardrun who stand against Clans Grimward, Ironmound, and Stonetooth, and who are not tied down by other war involvement, are heavily encouraged to put unified efforts starting this October towards one of two critical fronts, as a split of efforts will risk both fronts having adverse outcomes. The choices made in the coming months will affect Mardrun and its story for years to come.

The Choice to be Made

  • Either form a defense with Clan Goldenfield on their Hammerfall border to save the clan and their winter critical supplies,
  • Or join the City-State of Newhope in their invasion across the Yurnai into Clan Grimward.

June 274 – News & Rumors

Martial forces in the area known as the Gap came together last month to hold back the forces of Clan Grimward and Stonetooth, and the stories are already making their way across Mardrun. Tales of blacksmiths working quicker than ever seen before with an enchanted hammer, and another hammer, enchanted to give arcane protections, and yet another enchanted hammer, taken from a Stonetooth leader and kept for the eastern allied forces. As the hammers came down, fierce and unquestionable in their ferocity, whispers turned to grand tales. The land previously known as “The Gap” has now come to be known as Hammerfall!

Steinjottuns Hawk Races went off without a hitch– or, at least without any major disasters. Many eyes were on two birds in particular, both hawks having shown a great deal of their talent during pre-race demonstration by their handlers. Many placed bets on the two hawks, and as the races began, the two were neck-and-neck through the courses. As the crowd’s energy ramped up, so did the birds. It seemed the birds grew so agitated, they started pecking at each other mid-race, allowing the third place bird, a scraggly looking pigeon, to make its way to the finish first! The confusion among the crowd was a split between those celebrating the unexpected underdog win, and frustration among those who wish they’d never placed a bet on a bird in the first place. Perhaps the handlers next year will focus on training discipline and patience into their birds.

As the colorful blossoms of spring fall away to make room for the vibrant summer, a renewed hope has come for the hunter and gatherers around Mardrun. The Woodhallow duck have returned from their winter migrations. These waterfowl, better known to the colonists as the Fawyth Empress for the ornate crown-like feather structure on their head, make their home in old decaying trees most typical of the murky heart of the dirge. The migration of these birds is critical to the ecosystem and way of life of many Ulven communities. Through a process known as anchoring, the birds consume the various flora from the areas they migrate to, and upon returning, the seeds still in their digestive tract give way to greater biodiversity in the area. Many herbalists cultivate these rare plants and use the knowledge to better their understanding of potentially distant lands. Rumors have been circulating that late into the summer, after the plants have had a chance to grow, many of the skilled trackers from Clan Steinjottun and warriors from Whiteoak are planning an expedition deep into the dirge, where many of these birds roost, to find potentially never-before-seen plants.

Shattered Spear has been seen preparing for their Moot this month, with many refugees seen traveling to the area. The two top contenders for the position of Clanleader have been seen socializing with the travelers, Grettir checking on injuries and Sigurmond regaling war-stories. With no large-scale group consensus on which contender is more favorable, the continent is waiting eagerly to find out what decision the Clan will come to.

Attention is turning back to Hammerfall again as troop morale begins to dwindle with the constant fear of the return of the “Salt Beasts”. Reports have come in detailing piles of salt seemingly dumped across the ground in some areas, but no salt beasts in sight. Theories include anything from Salt Beasts melting into piles of salt in the sweltering sun, to Stonetooth leaving salt around to create paranoia amongst any who see it. It is unknown at this time how many Salt Beasts are still in the area, but reports of sightings have continued as the weeks have gone on. Now, without a concentrated war party or, perhaps, help from the Northern Syndar, only time will tell if the beasts stick around.

In Clan Stormjarl, forces have realized that Grimwards push on their coasts are more than just raids. As the fighting continues, both on the coast and in the water, Stormjarl will need to keep up their momentum of success to come out ahead. The treacherous fight to travel to Stormjarl doesn’t look to be letting up, and concern continues to grow about allies being able to come to Stormjarl’s aid.

Prince Aylin has announced officially: The Annual Market Fair will be held in Aylin’s Reach! The location is exciting for many as it will give access to many in the neutral clans to be able to attend, and many are hoping the Northern Syndar are staying in the area for the fair as well. The Prince looks forward to seeing smiling faces and glasses raised in celebration, rather than swords raised in battle, at least for a little while.

May 274 – News & Rumors

Northern Syndar have returned to the colonies, this time surprisingly, to visit Prince Aylin in Aylin’s Reach. The rumor spread that Newhope’s Magic Box Blunder is the reason for the shift in typical location for them, but nothing has been confirmed. And, can you really blame Newhope, what with visions of the Mother coming from the box?

Several surviving Chieftains and Jarls of Clan Shattered Spear met recently to address the urgent, unfortunate situation recently seen in Stormjarl of the captured Shattered Spear being forced to fight to their deaths, else their families be put to death. This “Council of Shattered Spear” as some have called it, have come to a formal stance on the matter, believing this to be an emergency enough to take the initiative in leading the Clan, regardless of the lack of real structured leadership. A letter was sent to Clanleader Graytir Stormjarl, addressed as being from Viselda Mossguard.

“The remnants of Clan Shattered Spear have heard what has been occurring along your front lines. We know certainly that those attacking you are now considered your enemies rather than the allies they used to be, and we know nothing can be done about the casualties they cause to your people. We only ask that, considering they surely wouldn’t have chosen this without their families on the line, you give them honorable warriors deaths, and funeral rites like you would your own. Perhaps someday our Clans will come together on a field of buried Stonetooth to celebrate.”

After this letter was sent and received, many speculated on why the makeshift council hadn’t disbanded and gone back to their duties with their packs. The group stayed in the main settlement town of Nightriver, Tungstadr, for over a week after their initial discussion was concluded, only finally looking like they were getting ready to leave recently. Emerging from their private discussions, they came together, standing together with Viselda at the forefront to make an announcement.

“It is time to select a new Clanleader. The council will reconvene next month to hold a Moot, and surviving Shattered Spear and any of their allies will be welcome to attend. The Moot will focus on the Clan’s current strongest contenders: Sigurmon Shattered Spear, Chieftain of Pack Dawnrock. His wishes are to bring the Clan back together; to retake the land and push out Clan Grimward and Stonetooth until they are all dust under his boot; and Grettir Shattered Spear, a Daughter of Gaia who firmly believes that what’s best for the Clan is the path of survival– staying with Nightriver, winning the war, and preserving the lives of the survivors by not pushing back into their old homelands, only to die in the effort.”

The Ironsand deposit that was found off the eastern coast of Nightriver is now the topic of Nightriver’s news. With Spring thawing out the ground and laborers ready to capitalize on this incredible find, the Clan is preparing ships to sail out to the island and bring in these harvested goods. Nightriver’s allies are being invited to join this laborer’s voyage when the time comes, especially those with the ability to harvest or refine the collected Ironsand. Many are expecting this to be a much welcome reprieve from what’s likely to be harsh fighting in the sweltering heat that’s typical for June.

Steinjottun’s much anticipated Hawk Races are nearly underway, with several contestants already showing off their bird’s prowess in the streets of Steinjottun’s main settlement. According to locals in the area, the judges are hoping to see a few more contestants joining the folds before the races are underway, but never-the-less, the town is quite excited to see how the birds do.

April 274 – News & Rumors

The family of a Daughter of Gaia from Clan Goldenfield is preparing for the City-State of Newhope to hold a trial against the group of so-called “cultists” who killed her. There is quite a bit of attention on this trial, as the Ulven have a very different justice system from the City-State and some have questioned Newhope’s choice to not turn the accused killers into the Clan’s leadership. Being that another victim of these killers was a Daughter of Gaia from Clan Shattered Spear, the trial will go on as planned in the City-State, and the collective Ulven attention can be kept on the war effort.

Newhope has also been seen with a significant increase in caravans leaving their borders and heading North-West, presumably towards the ports that can take those supplies to their allies in Stormjarl.

The rise of the Blood Moon in early March left many Ulven uneasy. The sight of what usually is a bad omen, often indicative of increased Mordok activity and aggression, furthered Clan Whiteoak’s belief that a big Mordok offensive was on its way. However, as the Blood Moon rose and fell with very little activity, the Ulven stationed at the Shield were left both wary and grateful for the relative ease. In the absence of the Mordok’s typical heavy aggression, Pack Redwind has stepped forward to lead groups composed of both Whiteoak and Axehound Ulven in an effort to map more of the Great Forest that borders their land.

Clan Shattered Spear is once again at the forefront of news on Mardrun, now that fighters from within the Clan’s captured territory are fighting for Grimward and Stonetooth under threat of their families back home being killed. In the chaos of the first few incursions from them onto Stormjarl’s land, a single Shattered Spear Ulven was saved from death before the decision to fight them back was made. Those close to the action where this happened have reported that this Ulven refuses to speak, overwhelmed with grief for the family they believe is now dead. Clan Stormjarl leadership is hopeful to hear from whatever Shattered Spear leadership remains for a decision on how to handle these warriors going forward.

In a surprising move, Clan Spiritclaw has sent a delegate to Grimward territory, flying their own banners in neutrality, in an attempt to gather more information about the strange religious beliefs and magical ability rumored to be used by the Stonetooth. So far, its unclear if this attempt has or hasn’t been successful.

Rumors have spread throughout Nightriver, that despite the tragic murder of their Clanleader being a year ago now, frontline fighters have been repeating Branthur Nightriver’s name as they strike down their enemies. These Ulven seek to make absolutely sure their Clanleader name is heard over and over again by the Great Wolf, so that if he is still in the thick of his Journey, that he faces the Great Wolf is allowed to move on.

Clan Steinjottun has announced a new festival taking place next month – Steinjottun Hawk Racing! Any and all across the continent are invited to bring their hawks, owls, crows, or even chickens to test out their prowess and skill. Several different tournaments will take place, all designed to put your bird to task. The victor bird is expected to be awarded, and their owner will be seen very favorably among the many expected to be spectating the tournaments. Don’t miss this exciting festival!

March 274 – News & Rumors

News of Nightriver crosses the continent again as the Clan announces they’ve made some ground against Grimward in the Pass in the past few months. Grimward is still holding the majority of the Pass, but this small victory means all flanking routes are effectively cut-off, and homes nearby have less danger to worry about if Nightriver forces are pushed back again.

Additionally, a ravine of Ironsand was discovered off the eastern coast on an unpopulated island, and once again the Clan is calling for assistance to collect and refine this sand this Spring.

The Southern coastline has been seeing unexpected action from Clanless Ulven lately, with two different raiding groups clashing. It seems that one group opposes the colonists and has been showing aggression to smaller colonist settlements, most recently the Fire Isle, and the other is distinctly anti-Grimward. The two groups clashed recently, but the winner of the fight was unclear in reports.

An informant of Lictor Mary has been spreading new findings from a specialized incursion into the lost Shattered Spear territory. From what information could be gathered, it seems able-bodied captured Ulven are being moved south, while those being kept local are having families threatened if they escape. It’s unclear now what this could mean for those Ulven, but this knowledge combined with the assumption of a heavy push on Stormjarl coming in Spring, the informant believes captured Shattered Spear could be involved in the coming fight.

Surprising and hopeful news has come from Stormjarl as well. The past few winter months have brought some stronger-than-usual storms to their coastline. The Clan had those weather events well in-hand, but reports say that the skies to the North, right in Grimward’s direction, looked to get far more treacherous. While nothing can be confirmed, if they received weather worse than Stormjarl has recently seen, this could mean a significant impact to their coastline and, hopefully, their readiness come Spring.

Shieldhaven has sent word to other allied groups: Ironmound is preparing to march to war. Stonetooth scouts in particular have already begun probing against Shieldhaven’s defenses. This news comes after Ironmound’s letter declaring their intentions of war, and now the continent can be assured; Ironmound is ready, and they are coming.

December 273 – News & Rumors

Clan Nightriver has once again been made the center of attention among the Allied forces of Eastern Mardrun. After the attempted murder of two young boys in Pack Bloodmoon’s territory, the new Clanleader, and still Bloodmoon’s Pack Leader, Sylvir Bloodmoon has made it clear: this violence will not be tolerated in her lands. While she is unable to remove herself from the important task of readying the Clan for the likely heavy uptick in the war when Spring arrives, her choice to appoint a trusted member of her pack was well-received by both her pack, and the Clan Shattered Spear refugees who expressed concern about their safety in the area.

Jarl Zorwyn Bloodmoon is the appointed representative that should be contacted with any information pertaining to the attempted double-murder in Pack Bloodmoon’s territory. Information that leads to the capture of the criminal may be rewarded.

On another warfront: Clan Whiteoak has begun making preparations for a Mordok attack they anticipate to come in early-Spring. The lack of activity from the Mordok in the last few months has been very unusual, and the Clan believes this can only mean another large-scale offensive, not unlike the Silfurfal attack, should be expected from them. Being that they are solely-focused on the Shield Of Mardrun and not the Conquering, Clan Whiteoak expects to be more than ready to meet the Mordok threat swiftly and harshly, especially with the support of the other neutral clans.

Rumors of strange Syndar spending time in Newhope have finally been met with solid answers. The Syndar being escorted through the City-State are none other than the same Northern Syndar that have been in the city for over a year already. Now that they’re being shown around, there seem to be even more questions than before. What is their business here in the Southern lands? And, do they have anything to do with the other Northern-populace, the Stonetooth?

Duke Aailmyr, the newest member of the Newhope Council, having been deeply focused on his project of creating a training program for up-and-coming Enchanters, has finally announced that the program is ready to open enrollment! With this project of his concluded and the Market District’s very fancy Enchanted Lamps still burning strong, many are watching excitedly to see what the new Duke’s next big move will be.

In news of the Conquering, many have reported sightings of a traveling bard group from Newhope traveling along frontlines and playing their music for the fighters there. Spirits are notably lifted everywhere they go, noticeably enough for their actions to be talked about long after they’ve moved on to another stage.

In one final update from Clan Nightriver regarding the Conquering: the strip of land known as “The Pass” is still mostly controlled by Grimward forces. However, all flanking routes have been cut off completely, and there is enough land controlled by Nightriver that nearby homes and villages should rest easy, knowing that their warriors stand as a mighty buffer between them and the enemy.

October 273 – News & Rumors

A copied letter becomes widely dispersed across the various clans and refugees of Mardrun, stirring strong emotions as the first words of Clan Grimward are heard since the Moot that marked the start of the war.

——————————————

To all Clans,

Long have we watched as you sat idly by, pretending that misgivings from the last war were simply gone. Allowing those invasive pests to extend their reach and their silver tongues to spout lies to all ulven, consequences withheld even after our people were forced to prove the truth that their leaders hid. The Dirge and mordok are of their reckless actions and yet they are allowed to flourish within your lands. Some of you even stand with them as their leaders commit these atrocities against the ulven people as a whole, while the rest of you cowardly stand by and allow them continuance.

“Dishonorable”, a word of which your clans and these parasites deem to freely scream, yet for the past many years have taken no regard for your own lack of honor. Your perceived honor has become meaningless, so only glory and unification will remain for us. Clan Grimward’s actions are not a cause, we are but a response to your own corrupted misaction that we have had to continually endure since the civil war. Clan Shattered Spear’s fall was not contentedly sought but was found necessary before we move to the greater of evils, but those who remain truly neutral to our cause will not suffer the same violent fate. Clans of the north, continue your sage course and unity will find you peacefully.

And to all clanless who have spoken with your actions;

You have been heard, and there is the opportunity to make your cause a reality. Clan Grimward and Clan Stonetooth welcome those who recognize that they have been wronged, and together we will right these wrongs and create a unified future.

By the Pillars,

Warleader Khulgar Graytide of Clan Grimward

Wood meets sand as ships make landfall. Boots run across the beach sand as warriors move inland with no opposition in the area to stop them. A notable portion of Clan Grimward’s raider fleet has landed warpacks on the upper coast of Clan Shattered Spear lands behind the frontline, rapidly carving into the thin northern line of Clan Shattered Spear’s forces and soon to surround their warpacks fighting on the frontline. The final days of the clan have been marked, but their unwavering allies may have something to say about this eventual fate.

Despite this distressing letter and news, an unexpected story is excitedly traveling from the south. On almost every front, Clan Grimward and Stonetooth’s warpacks have made ground with their initial offensives, a seemingly undeterrable force that reduces morale and lays ruin wherever they travel. The image crumbles though, as an incursion of multiple smaller Clan Stormjarl and colonist forces have banded together, managing to ferry the Yurnai River and break into Clan Grimward lands. Many colonists near the river speak avidly of the spotted plums of smoke from burning Grimward villages, but only those fighting will know how much harm has been caused or how long the attack will persist.

A trickling account travels from the northern fronts as but only a few prisoners kept by Grimward have managed an escape from their hold. The story is soured by the number of prisoners that died during this breakout, but the few that lived confirm the existence of this prisoner work camp. Reports from the Clan Shattered Spear lines show Clans Grimward and Stonetooth fielding larger numbers of combat healers, pulling and healing larger numbers of wounded from both sides in battles. These two stories merge to show signs of the invaders bolstering their supply workforce with these captured warriors and packs, or perhaps a more troublesome usage.

Ships are seen sailing south carrying the flags of Aylin’s Reach, and with it travels the rumor that the Prince’s marines are traveling to reinforce Clan Stormjarl. The people of Aylin’s Reach speak of travelers arriving from other lands to provide advisement or request aid, with the Prince seeming to slowly but carefully choose actions to progress with. Despite criticism of their slowness of decision, the Prince of Aylin’s Reach and his council indicate to have plans being finalized as a portion of their forces and supplies are sent externally but are still open to those who would provide wisdom and information for this ongoing war.

Despite music often being lost in war, a small song has spread among troops in various warfronts, with many variations of it being born from different groups but many agree to this being the original with an unknown author:

“A Toast to Arland Stormjarl”:

Fine folk like this, the Grimward dogs

Have begun to attack.

So with our honor, tools, and blades,

Their scourge, we must drive back!

August 273 – News & Rumors

Various tales and stories pour from Clan Shattered Spear as refugees travel eastward as their homeland is unable to sustain a defense against their invaders. While everyone has heard the past stories of Clan Grimward burning villages and destroying farmland as they initially invaded Clan Shattered Spear, now the news has changed. Travelers heading east speak of no more plumes of fire and smoke following them as they retreat from villages and towns, the invasion having long ago stopped being for destruction and instead being for conquering.

While it is unclear if chosen out of duress from Clan Grimward’s prior letters, a decision of their own, or other possible reasons, Clan Spiritclaw and Clan Steinjottun Clanleaders have separately declared neutrality in this war. Along with their declarations, statements travel that their borders currently remain open to outsiders and trade, although it is unclear if that will continue. All four of the northern clans have variably begun to accept refugee packs and individuals coming out of Clan Shattered Spear, although refugees traveling to the clans who declared neutrality are warned that they will not be allowed to rejoin the war, lest risking the neutrality statements of their hosts. As the fighting continues in Clan Shattered Spear, it is unclear where their people will make their new home or if they will become split into pieces of their former clan.

Prince Aylin’s banners have been seen traveling through ulven territories as he deploys extra troops to The Spire to reinforce their territory near The Pass of The Hackles. The Prince does not hide that he is in discussion with his council and various groups to determine where he will focus his support in this conflict, but for now his remaining forces and ships remain at home. Rumor has it that there is a small window for negotiations to persuade his decision, which is expected to be finalized at the end of September.

Between the sustained brutal heat and unrelenting storms sweeping the continent, some Daughters of Gaia preach that the Goddess Gaia herself is intervening to stop the bloodshed; her tears birthing the endless storms and fury burning the landscape as she watches her children slaughter each other. The bloodshed does not slow though, and the Daughters warn of worsening intervention should the conflict continue.

Proud news from Warleader Holmar Bloodmoon of Clan Nighriver quickly spreads this month as he leads a large group of warpacks crashing into Clan Grimward’s defensive positions on the east side of The Pass. Through their fury and need for blood-soaked revenge, the clan struck hard and organized against the prepared defenders, and while many lives were lost the eventual retreat of Grimward’s forces was undeniable. With their entrance to the east side of pass secured, Grimward lost any paths that could have been used to raid Nightriver lands further, but as Nightriver progressed deeper into The Pass they found that Grimward had continued their defensive preparations in the middle of it as well, the extent of which is not known at this time. Further to the north, Clan Nightriver banners are seen fighting Clan Stonetooth at the southern edge of Clan Shattered Spear’s lost territory, although rumors pass that these forces may not be staying long due to the rapidly upcoming harvest season. Despite Clan Goldenfield greatly aiding with supplies, they alone cannot feed all of Clan Nightriver’s war efforts.

With the continent focused on the war sweeping across it, a horrific rumor barely manages to spread to southern lands from travelers and refugees moving through the northern clans. A Clan Shattered Spear Daughter of Gaia was found in Clan Axehound territory, dead and hollowed. The cause of this tragedy remains unknown and the body is currently being transported to Clan Spiritclaw who requested to provide a special funeral pyre ritual to the Goddess Gaia for the Daughter’s passage. Preparations are already underway for the soon upcoming ritual, with which many more Daughters are expected to arrive to give sympathy and gain solace.
